82 Division formally known as 4 Infantry Division came into existence in August 1975 following a reorganization of the Nigerian Army (NA) in the same year.

The 4 Infantry Division formally Lagos Garrison Organization (LGO) was created and located at Abalti Barracks, Lagos in January1964. The LGO was responsible for all garrison administrative duties until its disbandment and in its place 4 Infantry Division was created and located at Ikeja - Lagos.

In 1981 following another reorganization of the NA, the 4 Infantry Division was changed from an Infantry to a composite division and moved to Enugu. What is known today as 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has passed through a lot of changes in nomenclature. The Division has been commanded by some of the best and experienced officers of the Nigerian Army the first being Maj Gen DE Obada while the current GOC is Maj Gen AA Sangotade.

When it was Lagos Garrison Organisation the logo was coconut tree with 2 crossed swords. When it became known as 4 Infantry Division, the logo changed to scorpion. The change was necessitated by the role, as the scorpion is symbolically better for a fighting infantry division. On its changing to a composite role, the Division adopted the dragon as its logo. The dragon is a mystical monster-like reptile with wings, 4 legs and strange long claws, often spitting fire. It is a very versatile animal that can operate on both land and sea. It is generally believed that the dragon is firm and unassuming and that when it grips any object with its claws, it does not leave it until it either tears the creature or strangles it. Therefore, 82 Division was founded upon the qualities of a dragon.

The dragon is super imposed on three colours - deep blue, sky blue and brown with each colour representing each of the three roles of the Division. The sky blue is symbolic of its air mobility; the deep blue signifies the amphibious function while the brown colour symbolizes the fact that the Division can equally operate on land. At present it has changed to 82 Division dropping composite but still retain its roles and functions.
