The history of 2 Division (formally 2 Infantry Division and later 2 Mechanized Division) Nigerian Army dates back to the Nigerian Civil War. The invasion of the Mid-West by 'Biafran' forces was so sudden that Headquarters Nigerian Army was caught unprepared by this invasion. However it reacted swiftly by forming the 2 Infantry Division. The first GOC was Lt Col Murtala Mohammed then Inspector of Signals (and later General and Head of State). He started the Division with hurriedly gathered cooks, batmen, clerks and all kinds of soldiers in Lagos area and Ibadan initially left out of battle.

Maj Gen CI Obiakor

The first Logo of the Second Infantry Division was One Finger sign with blue background. This was to reflect the slogan 'ONE NIGERIA' with everybody raising one finger. In June 1968 the logo was changed to a leaping 'Tiger' as an indication of the Division's preparedness and ruthlessness. In Aug 75 'Snarling Tiger' was introduced as the logo of the Division, which is still in use today.
